About the School

StarTran is an online-only, log-in anytime program teaching NCRA-approved StarTran Realtime Theory through audio, text, video and downloadable textbooks and supplementary materials, including a mature StarTran CAT dictionary. The author and instructor of StarTran Realtime Theory is Marlene Struss. There are 40 Lessons and 77 literary, two-voice, or four-voice tests in the program. Each lesson takes approximately 10-15 hours of study and practice. The mission of StarTran Online is to ensure that the program is affordable and convenient and that students are guaranteed to be realtime conflict-free steno writers (at beginning speeds) upon completion of the program with knowledge of all basic aspects of writing a court, depo, or other live proceeding on the steno machine, completely ready for speedbuilding without having to relearn any aspect of theory or writing. Students are encouraged to use CAT systems or the Plover translation system, but it is not a CAT system course and CAT is not absolutely necessary. Students who complete the course by passing all tests with a score of 95% or higher receive a Certificate of Completion and are qualitied to continue their court reporting or captioning education at any court reporting school or program. Students are encouraged to join Simple Steno online speedbuilding program, which is built on the same platform as StarTran Online, to complete their education.
